Arts Beyond the Streets grew from long standing relationships between artists in Charlottesville, Virginia and Makhanda, South Africa. In a celebration of arts and inclusiveness, several artist-activists will be traveling from Makhanda, South Africa to collaborate with Charlottesville artists and cultural groups.
This year will be the 35th Annual Community Worship Service commemorating the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year's event will include Rev. Dr. Harry Blake of Shreveport, LA as the guest speaker. Dr. Blake was a co-worker of Dr. King including planning many of the civil rights protests and other events for Dr. King. He is the former pastor of the Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church.
In commemoration of Civil Rights pioneer Dr. Martin L. King Jr., the ''Continuing His Dream & Works'' event will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 from 1:00pm - 3:00pm at the historic Carver Recreation Center (233 4th St. NW-Charlottesville,Va.). The event is a family affair and free to everyone.
For the 6th Annual "Walk a Mile For Martin" Event, students, teachers, and families will walk at least one mile around the neighborhood in order to march against some sort of injustice that they personally choose such as: bullying, hunger, poverty, or educational inequality. The goal is to get our school communities to walk for a positive purpose. They could even dedicate their mile to a person who has sacrificed for them. All participants have the option of walking or running as many miles as they would like.
Known by many as the "Gospel Temptations," Larnell Starkey and the Spiritual Seven is made up of brothers, sons and cousins who are all members of the Chestnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Wirtz, Virginia. Their music, a zestful blend of traditional gospel with a twist of contemporary soul, showcases the group's amazing vocal harmonies from high-flying falsettos to the deep rich sounds of the low bass. For 50 years, this award-winning ensemble has moved the spirit of people of all ages and denominations.
The exhibition's title is taken from a speech given by Sojourner Truth in 1867. The installation features 14 paintings of African American women from Robert Shetterly's Americans Who Tell The Truth Series and commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment.
Artist Robert Shetterly will give a gallery talk at 7 pm.
Join professor of Theatre Arts Brad Stoller, drama therapist Mecca Burns and artist/activist Matthew Slaats for a workshop series that explores Theatre of the Oppressed practices, taking on issues of power, privilege and oppression through improvised games and exercises intended to promote democracy and spur social change. The series is part of the Imagining a New Democracy Summit.
Come here the stories of the descendants of Monticello's enslaved families as they reflect upon and remember their ancestors almost two centuries later.
