Twin Oaks is a local, income-sharing, intentional community. Stephan Przybylowicz and Ari Tupelo Sandler will discuss the community’s commitment to non-violence, how their income-sharing model works to help combat structural inequalities (such as sexism), and how the community grapples with internal power dynamics to lessen its effects.

McGuffey Art Center invites you to participate in an artistic collaboration connecting two communities more than 8,000 miles apart!

Arts Beyond the Streets grew from long standing relationships between artists in Charlottesville, Virginia and Makhanda, South Africa. In a celebration of arts and inclusiveness, several artist-activists will be traveling from Makhanda, South Africa to collaborate with Charlottesville artists and cultural groups.

"FACTUALITY": A 90 Minute Crash Course on Structural Inequality in America

Increase your cultural competency; participate in a game and dialogue that helps one better understand structural inequality in America.  The University Library will participate in the University MLK Celebration through FACTUALITY, a facilitated dialogue and board game that simulates real-life stories in America. Participants will take on the role of one of the diverse group of characters that encounter limitations or advantages based on the intersection of their race, sexual orientation, faith, and gender.

Hateful messages on Beta Bridge have become commonplace, and with the most recent against black trans women, the most vulnerable group in the country, it is important to TAKE A STAND and use our voices to ensure this does not happen again. Join the Multicultural Student Center and Hoos for Inclusive Sexual Education (HISE) for an event in which marginalized voices, perspectives, and artwork are centered, as we continue in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr., to take a stand for this, and other vulnerable communities.

Jennifer Eberhardt, a social psychologist at Stanford University, will discuss her 2019 book "Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do."

She is a 2014 MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was named one of Foreign Policy's 100 Leading Global Thinkers.

Across the world, youth activists like Greta Thunberg are influencing the global conversation on climate change. In the United States, young people of color are at the forefront of the climate movement and are taking a stand on climate change and environmental justice. Come be inspired by today's youth leaders of color as they share their experiences and knowledge in an interactive panel discussion - featuring Irsa Hirsi, Co-Founder of US Youth Climate Strike, Vic Barrett with Juliana v. United States, and Kaylah Brathwaite with Zero Hour.

Theatre of the Oppressed Lab: Creativity and Democracy

Join professor of Theatre Arts Brad Stoller, drama therapist Mecca Burns and artist/activist Matthew Slaats for a workshop series that explores Theatre of the Oppressed practices, taking on issues of power, privilege and oppression through improvised games and exercises intended to promote democracy and spur social change. The series is part of the Imagining a New Democracy Summit.
