Winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in History, David Blight's Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, is, in the words of The Pulitzer Prizes, "A breathtaking history that demonstrates the scope of Frederick Douglass’ influence through deep research on his writings, his intellectual evolution and his relationships."

Blight joins us for a discussion of his book and larger issues of race in America as part of UVA's 2020 Community MLK Celebration. Miller Center director Bill Antholis will moderate the discussion, and a book signing will follow.

Speakers:

David W. Blight is the Sterling Professor of History, African American Studies, and American Studies and Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University.

Larycia Hawkins is the Abd el-Kader Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and a lecturer at the University of Virginia where she is a political scientist, public speaker, and embodied solidarity activist.
