Connecting Lives, Opening Hearts: Community-Engaged Teaching

Please join us for a special evening dedicated to highlighting, celebrating, and inspiring community-engaged teaching and learning here at UVA. The event will open with welcoming remarks by President James E. Ryan, followed by a screening of Seats at the Tablea 90-minute documentary about UVA's Books Behind Bars program founded by Associate Professor Andrew Kaufman in 2009. Afterward, there will be a panel discussion moderated by Provost M. Elizabeth Magill.

Panelists include:

  • Kelsey Bowman, former UVA student featured in film
  • Bradley Brewer, former correctional center student featured in film
  • Valerie Boykin, Director of Virginia's Department of Juvenile Justice; UVA alumna
  • Andrew Kaufman, Creator of Books Behind Bars; Assistant Director of Community-Engaged Learning Initiatives at the Center for Teaching Excellence

Connecting Lives, Opening Hearts: Community-Engaged Teaching will serve as the marquee event for UVA's Public Service Week.

Cosponsors include the Office of the President, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, and College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
