Training and education are fundamental to maintaining an environment free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. EOCR offers online and in-person educational opportunities to all University faculty, staff, and students, which include presentations, coaching sessions, workshops, and training sessions.
PADHR Training
EOCR offers Preventing and Addressing Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation ("PADHR") training. All employees are required to complete the online PADHR Training once every two years.
PADHR training covers:
- Recognizing discrimination, harassment, and retaliation
- Responding if someone observes or experiences such conduct, or receives a report of such conduct as a supervisor
- Disability, pregnancy, and religious accommodations, how an employee may seek these accommodations, and guidance for supervisors on handling requests
- UVA resources
EOCR can provide the training in an alternative format for employees unable to complete the online PADHR Training module. To request the alternative format or disability-related accommodations, please contact EOCR at (434) 924-3200 or [email protected].
Request Customized Training
PADHR Training (required for all University, UVA-Wise, and University Medical Center employees) may be accessed in Workday.
If unable to complete online training, faculty and staff may request to attend an alternative training. To request an alternative PADHR training session, please email [email protected] and provide the following information:
- Full name
- Computing ID (e.g., anc1a)
- Title
- Department/office
- Phone number
- Training version (General version or faculty and supervisor version)
- All days of the week that you are available to attend training/preference for a morning session (between 9am-12pm) or afternoon session (between 2-5pm) (e.g., available Monday-Thursday/prefer a morning session)
Should you require disability-related accommodations, please include the accommodation(s) requested with your registration information as early as possible, but no later than seven calendar days prior to the training to ensure ample time to arrange for the necessary accommodations. Examples of accommodations include ASL-English interpreting services and accessible copies of training materials.
If your question about the online PADHR Training is not answered below, please contact us at [email protected] or (434) 924-3200.
- Why is the Preventing and Addressing Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation ("PADHR") Training required?
Ensuring that every employee understands their rights and responsibilities with respect to discrimination, harassment, and retaliation is of vital importance to the University.
University policy also requires this training. The Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights ("EOCR") is responsible for ensuring that the University community receives instruction in support of institutional efforts to prevent and address discrimination, harassment, and retaliation (implementing the HRM-009: Preventing and Addressing Discrimination and Harassment and HRM-010: Preventing and Addressing Retaliation policies).
- Who is required to take the PADHR Training?
University policies related to non-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation (HRM-009 & HRM-010) apply to all employees of the University, the University Medical Center, and the University College at Wise. This means that all faculty and staff, wage, faculty wage, temporary employees, and student employees, including graduate teaching and research assistants, are required to complete the training.
If you are uncertain whether you are required to complete the training, please email [email protected] or call (434) 924-3200.
Please note that sexual and gender-based harassment is covered by the University’s HRM-041: Policy on Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Other Forms of Interpersonal Violence ("Sexual Misconduct Policy"). A separate online training module administered by the Title IX & Sexual Misconduct team addresses these forms of harassment. Please contact the Title IX & Sexual Misconduct team at (434) 297-7988 or [email protected] for additional information.
- Am I considered a supervisor under Preventing and Addressing Discrimination and Harassment ("PADH") and Preventing and Addressing Retaliation ("PAR") Policies?
Under HRM-009 and HRM-010, a supervisor is any person who has authority to:
- Undertake or recommend tangible employment decisions (e.g., hiring, firing, and promoting) affecting an employee;
- Undertake or recommend academic decisions affecting a student; or
- Direct a student’s academic activities.
The following individuals are also considered supervisors:
- Faculty members who teach a course or to whom work-study students report; and
- Undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants who are responsible for grading course assignments, projects, quizzes, exams, or other coursework.
If you are uncertain which training to complete, please email [email protected] or call (434) 924-3200.
- How often am I required to complete this Training?
Typically, once every two years. However, circumstances may arise where a faculty or staff member may be asked to retake this training or participate in additional in-person PADHR training.
- How do I access the online PADHR Training?
You may access the online PADHR training in Workday by typing "Preventing and Addressing Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation" in the search box.
- Who should I contact if I have questions about the PADHR Training?
For content and/or policy questions, please contact EOCR at [email protected] or (434) 924-3200.
- Is PADHR Training the same as the Title IX Not on Our Grounds Responsible Employee Module?
No. PADHR training is separate from the online Not on Our Grounds Responsible Employee training module, and covers different topics. Therefore, completion of the Responsible Employee training does not satisfy the PADHR training requirement. For questions about the Responsible Employee training or HRM-041: Policy on Sexual and Gender-Based Harassment and Other Forms of Interpersonal Violence (‘Sexual Misconduct Policy”), please contact the Title IX & Sexual Misconduct team at [email protected] or (434) 297-7988.
- Who should I contact if I have issues accessing the online PADHR Training due to a disability?
Please contact EOCR at [email protected] or (434) 924-3200.
